Early Life and Career Beginnings
Zac Brown was born in 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia. As a youth, Brown went to Mashburn Elementary School in Cumming, Georgia, and then to Lakeview Academy in Gainesville. When he was eight, he was given his mother’s guitar, and took two years of classical guitar lessons. Brown returned to Cumming to attend South Forsyth High School. At the age of 17, he moved to Dahlonega, where he graduated from Lumpkin County High School. During this time, he received tutoring from a vocal coach at his church. He also started to play solo gigs at local venues, where he performed covers of country and pop songs.
In 2002, Brown formed the Zac Brown Band with drummer Marcus Petruska and bass guitarist Jacob Lawson. Subsequently, the Zac Brown Band released its first independent album, “Home Grown.” The band added members Jimmy De Martini, John Driskell Hopkins, and Chris Fryar over the years, and signed with Live Nation Artists Records.
